The University of Guelph community is grieving the passing of Dr. Karen Gordon, a highly regarded professor and academic leader in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, who died on January 8, 2026. University officials shared the news with deep sadness, honoring her as a valued colleague, mentor, and dedicated member of the academic community.
Dr. Gordon’s career was defined by her commitment to education, research, and service. She was a Professor in the School of Engineering and served as Associate Dean (Academic) for the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, roles through which she shaped the academic experience of countless students and provided steadfast support to faculty members.
A recognized expert in biomechanics, Dr. Gordon devoted much of her research to studying the mechanical properties of soft tissues and their role in conditions such as osteoarthritis, a disease affecting millions worldwide. Her work advanced scientific understanding of musculoskeletal health and influenced future developments in biomedical engineering and clinical practice.
Students and colleagues alike remember Dr. Gordon as a passionate and inspiring educator who held herself to the highest standards. She was widely admired for her thoughtful mentorship, her approachability, and her collaborative mindset, all of which encouraged innovation and growth within her discipline and across the broader university. Her contributions brought distinction to the University of Guelph’s engineering programs and earned her respect throughout the academic community.
In recognition of her lasting impact, the University has planned several tributes in her honor. Campus flags were lowered to half-mast on January 15 to commemorate her service and legacy. Additionally, a community gathering celebrating her life and contributions will take place on January 24 at the University of Guelph Arboretum, providing an opportunity for family, friends, and colleagues to come together in remembrance.
